Higher Tajweed & Qirat Department

Allah, the Exalted, says:

{ورتل القرآن ترتیلا}

Meaning: "And recite the Qur'an with tartil (clear, measured recitation)." (Surah Al-Muzzammil, verse 4)

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) explains this as:

الترتیل ھوتجوید الحروف ومعرفۃ الوقوف

Meaning: "Tartil is pronouncing every letter correctly from its point of articulation with all its qualities, and knowing where to pause." A clear, thorough understanding of tajweed is therefore essential for everyone; without it, many mistakes occur while reciting the Qur'an, and at times the meaning of a verse can even change. Mispronunciation can turn what should earn reward into sin — something no one wishes for. Every Muslim must therefore practise tajweed. To advance the practice of tajweed, this Jamia opened its Higher Tajweed & Qirat Department in 1998, a programme that continues to thrive to this day.

Activities and features of this department:

1. Helping students master every rule of tajweed in a short time.

2. Innovative methods to build proficiency in correctly pronouncing letters according to the rules of tajweed.

3. Instruction covering every ruling of the riwayah of Hafs from Imam 'Asim ibn Abi al-Najud (per al-Shatibiyyah with al-Jazariyyah).

4. A structured system for every student to learn recitation according to the rules of tajweed.

5. Special training in reciting with a beautiful voice (lahjah) and long breath control.

6. Dedicated effort, through assessing talent and voice, to build the competence needed to compete in national and international Qirat competitions.

7. Contemporary seminars to spread knowledge of Qirat and encourage regular practice.

8. Use of modern, Shariah-compliant sound-system technology to build interest in recitation and raise its standard to an international level.

9. Training every student to be skilled in every level of recitation — tartil, tadwir, and hadr.

10. Instruction in every ruling relevant to recitation and Qirat.
